Around here, adventure doesn't come in just one form.
It looks like hiking to a waterfall, paddling across Lake Lure, cruising miles of paved trail on two wheels, or finding your next hold on a boulder tucked beneath the mountains.
In Lake Lure, Chimney Rock & the Blue Ridge Foothills, some of the best moments happen outside—and there are plenty of ways to find yours.
Lace up. Clip in. Push off. Look up. Let's go.

From family-friendly walks to rugged mountain climbs, the Foothills offer trails for every kind of explorer.
Start with an icon.
Climb the Outcroppings Trail—or take the elevator—to the top of Chimney Rock for sweeping views across Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. Then keep exploring with trails that lead through forests, past dramatic rock formations, and toward one of the area's most impressive natural landmarks: Hickory Nut Falls.
Don't Miss: The 404-foot waterfall at the end of the Hickory Nut Falls Trail.
Best for: Iconic views + waterfall chasing
For a wilder side of Lake Lure, head to the Rumbling Bald access of Chimney Rock State Park.
Trails wind through massive boulders and hardwood forest beneath the imposing face of Rumbling Bald. It's also one of the region's premier climbing and bouldering destinations, so don't be surprised to spot climbers along the way.
Best for: Hiking + climbing scenery

Bring your bike—or make biking the reason for the trip.
Stretching approximately 13.5 paved miles through the heart of the Blue Ridge Foothills, the Thermal Belt Rail Trail makes it easy to turn a bike ride into an all-day small-town adventure.
Ride through multiple communities, stop for lunch, grab a coffee or sweet treat, and hop right back on the trail.
With a mostly level, paved surface, it's also approachable for families and recreational riders.
Best for: Families, casual cyclists + town hopping
Prefer dirt under your tires?

Sometimes the adventure is simply choosing two wheels instead of four.
Use Rutherford County's quieter roads, trails and greenways to experience the countryside at a slower pace—rolling past farms, forests, mountain views and small towns along the way.
Trade the lake for the river and explore the Broad River Paddle Trail, a scenic way to experience the Foothills from the water.

Whether you're looking for a leisurely float or another way to add adventure to your weekend, the Broad River offers a whole new perspective from the water.
Best for: Kayaking + canoeing + river adventures

Best for: Experienced climbers + boulderers
You don't have to be a technical climber to earn the feeling of reaching the top.
Take on the stairways of the Outcroppings Trail and climb through dramatic rock formations on your way to the Chimney. It's part hike, part climb and entirely worth the view.
Best for: Anyone who likes to earn their overlook

Hike, bike, paddle, and climb may be the headliners, but they're only the beginning.
Spend a quiet morning fishing Lake Lure or explore the rivers and streams that wind through the Foothills.
Head to Cherry Bounce Adventure Co. for an ATV, UTV or SxS adventure through mountain terrain near Bostic. It's a completely different way to experience the landscape—and a little mud is part of the fun.
Make Hickory Nut Falls your starting point, then see what other cascades and mountain streams you can discover throughout the area.
Campgrounds throughout the Foothills make it easy to extend your outdoor adventure after dark. Pitch a tent, park the RV or choose a cabin and end the night around a campfire.
Slow down and look around. Bring binoculars for birding, watch for wildlife along the trails and see what you discover when you're not rushing to the next destination.
Can't choose just one? Don't.
