October has something special about it in the Blue Ridge Foothills. The air turns crisp, the leaves begin to change, and as the sun disappears behind the mountains, even the most familiar places seem to hold a little mystery.
And around here, we've got stories.
From a historic lakeside inn rumored to have a few guests who never checked out to ghostly tales along Rutherfordton's Main Street, Appalachian folklore, spooky cocktails, and scarecrows popping up around town, Lake Lure, Chimney Rock & the Blue Ridge Foothills have a whole other side waiting to be discovered.
Whether you believe in things that go bump in the night or just love a little Halloween fun, October is the perfect time to explore the spookier side of the Foothills.

Built in 1927, this historic lakeside inn is known for its elegant atmosphere, storied past, and a few ghost stories that have followed it through the decades.
One of the most famous legends tells of a young bride who was allegedly murdered by her jealous husband in the 1930s. According to local lore, her spirit still wanders the halls in a white dress, sometimes accompanied by unexplained screams or the scent of flowers.
Other stories involve Dr. Lucius Morse, one of Lake Lure's founding visionaries, whose spirit some believe still keeps watch over the inn he helped create. Former employees and visitors have also described unexplained footsteps, mysterious voices, and unusual happenings.
Are these lingering spirits or simply the stories that come with a century of history? We'll leave that for you to decide.
Make it an overnight adventure: Check into The 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa and enjoy a historic stay with a little extra mystery. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself listening a little more closely to those nighttime creaks.
Founded in 1787, Rutherfordton has centuries of history tucked into its historic buildings, old streets, and local legends.
One particularly eerie tale surrounds the former Rutherford County jail. According to regional ghost lore, a condemned man proclaimed his innocence and warned that he would return to haunt the town. After his execution, stories emerged of a mysterious swinging shadow that supposedly appeared on the jail wall and resisted attempts to cover it.
Other local tales speak of strange lights near an old cemetery and the sounds of phantom trains.
These are stories passed down through folklore, not verified supernatural events. But they're exactly the kind of legends that make you look at a historic Main Street a little differently after dark.
Want to hear the stories for yourself? Rutherfordton's new Haunted Tales walking tours bring local history and mystery together for an October experience.

Not every mysterious story involves a ghost.
For a different kind of trip into the past, follow the Cherry Bounce Trail, a scenic historic route through Rutherfordton, Spindale, Forest City, Bostic and Golden Valley.
The route follows the legacy of Amos Owens, a legendary local moonshiner famous for his cherry-flavored liquor known as cherry bounce. Think hidden stills, mountain backroads, colorful characters, and stories from a time when the Foothills had a decidedly wilder side.
It's more historical intrigue than haunting, but a perfect addition to an October road trip, especially with fall color beginning to brighten the countryside.
Pro Tip: Make time for a stop at historic Washburn's General Store in Bostic and explore the quiet roads around Golden Valley. You'll discover a different side of the Foothills, where local stories and history are around every bend.
