Several areas of Lake Lure were used in the filming of the 1987 classic film Dirty Dancing. While filming, many of the cast and production team stayed at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa. The majority of filming was done at a former Boy's Camp. The camp gymnasium was the filming location of both the talent show and the final dance scene in the movie. The cabins for Johnny and the other staff members were filmed at the old camp counselor's cabins. A few of the buildings burned down, and Johnny's Cabin collapsed. The property was sold about 10 years after filming to a private development company, who leveled the remains and built a private, gated housing community. The golf scenes where filmed on the 16th hole of Bald Mountain Golf Course at Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure. If you play golf, you will be playing right on the scene location. The main lobby of the Esmeralda Inn and Restaurant is proud to have some of the original wood from the camp's gymnasium upon which Johnny and Baby shared their final dance. Anyone is welcome to stop in and view the flooring in the lobby.
