Find Your Trail: Celebrate Great Trails State Month in Rutherford County
This fall, get outside and connect with the trails, waterways, and vibrant communities of Rutherford County during Great Trails State Month. From now until Great Trails State Day on October 18, we invite you to explore, reflect, and celebrate the beauty that surrounds us—on foot, by paddle, and even on two wheels.
Now through October 18
Grab your checklist and hit the trails! This fun, self-guided scavenger hunt leads you across Rutherford County’s most scenic outdoor spaces. Paddle the Broad River, find boulders and trail markers, take selfies with trailheads, and support local businesses near the trail. Tag us in your photos or email them to participate—prizes include “Find Your Trail” hats and even a Rutherford County Staycation Giveaway!

September 13 | 10 AM - 3 PM
Celebrate fall migration with live raptor shows, guided bird walks, and interactive birding activities at Chimney Rock State Park—a fun, educational day for seasoned birders and families alike.
September 27 | 10 AM - 3 PM
Help keep our rivers beautiful! Paddle 4.8 miles of the Broad River while collecting trash and debris as part of this county-wide water-based cleanup. Presented by ROC in collaboration with Keep Rutherford County Beautiful and Keep North Carolina Beautiful.
Gear required. Sweep supplies provided.

September 27 | 3:45 PM Meetup, 4:00 PM Hike Start
Part of the Celebration of Resilience, this one-mile round-trip strenuous hike on the Chimney Rock Village Boulders Trail offers a powerful view of the area most affected by Hurricane Helene. This is more than a hike—it’s a moment to reflect, witness the recovery, and honor the strength of the Hickory Nut Gorge.
October 4 | 8:15 AM Registration, 9:30 AM Ride Start
Pedal into the season with this scenic ride through the Blue Ridge Foothills. Choose between a challenging 100K or a more moderate 50K route—either way, you’ll be surrounded by fall color, rolling hills, and camaraderie. Proceeds support youth cycling programs.

October 4 | 10 AM - 5 PM
Stop by the Rutherford Bound and Trails Collaborative booths to learn about new parks, greenways, and trail projects. Chat with local leaders and discover how to get involved.
October 18 | Time TBA
Celebrate the trails that bring us together with a guided hike, campfire, live music, and storytelling at Chimney Rock State Park. Stay tuned for details on this can't-miss finale to Great Trails State Month!
