Connect with nature, your family, yourself.

Whether you’re a test-yourself triathlete or a relaxation-junkie pontoon boat fan, Rutherford County is your outdoor center. Our air and scenery will get you up and out for fun.

Looking to test your self or learn something new? Go rock climbing and rappelling with Fox Mountain Guides and Climbing School. At Chimney Rock State Park, Fox Mountain Guides offers lessons for beginners and experienced climbers.

Rutherford County has eight golf courses and two miniature golf locations. For golf with an English accent, visit Cleghorn Plantation Golf & Country Club in Rutherfordton. Cleghorn Plantation dates back to 1752 when King Charles II of Britain granted 2,000 acres to William Cleghorn. Today, it offers memberships and public passes, too. Golf Digest listed Cleghorn as one of its “Best Places to Play.”

At Rumbling Bald Resort in Lake Lure, you’ll find two championship courses. The Bald Mountain Golf Course was made famous by the golf scene in “Dirty Dancing.” Both resort courses feature bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways. The Bald Mountain course rating is 70.9 and the slope rating is 128.

Rumbling Bald Resort’s Apple Valley Golf Course, designed by Dan Maples in 1986, offers 18 holes that are slightly longer than Bald Mountain and stretch 6,756 yards from the longest of the four tees. The tree-lined fairways are more forgiving and allow for more “grip-it and rip-it” action. The course rating is 73.2 and the Slope Rating is 140.

Bring your bike and discover the power of YOU. With major cycling events and triathlons here, cycling and biking are beloved by the locals and the visitors.

The new Buffalo Creek Park Mountain Biking Trail is part of a 200-acre park and opened in Spring 2014. Seven miles of professionally built mountain biking and hiking trails include picnic areas along Buffalo Creek. Mountain bike rentals are available at Rumbling Bald Resort; call 828-694-3005.

The Thermal Belt Rail Trail in Rutherfordton & Spindale provides an eight-mile ride in one direction. Portions of the trail have recently been upgraded to paved surfaces.
